Cliff Lee was in disbelief last offseason when he found out he was headed to Seattle. This trip to the Pacific Northwest comes as no surprise.
Facing his former Mariners teammates for the first time since being traded again in July, Lee takes the ball for the AL West-leading Texas Rangers on Saturday night when they try to rebound from one of their worst offensive performances of the season.
After going 4-0 with a 1.56 ERA in five playoff starts for Philadelphia last season -- including both of the team's World Series victories -- Lee expected to sign an extension with the two-time defending NL champions.
Instead, he was shipped to the Mariners in a four-team swap that ultimately sent 2003 AL Cy Young winner Roy Halladay from Toronto to Philadelphia.
"Basically, they had an opportunity to get the best pitcher in baseball," Lee said after the trade. "I can't blame them for choosing Roy Halladay over me."
